The interactive Kiwiana display is free and provides fascinating insights into New Zealand’s popular culture in 26 exhibits that are a tribute to many of New Zealand’s national icons, heroes, history and way of life.
The walkway, which is always open, is named in honour of Sir Edmund Hillary, the New Zealand mountaineer, explorer and philanthropist. Back in 1953 Sir Ed and Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay were the first to reach the summit of Mount Everest, considered to be the highest peak in the world at 8,850 metres.
Exhibitions within the gallery include a tribute to Sir Edmund Hillary, Weetbix, Marmite, rural life, pavlova, No.8 Wire, the Buzzy Bee, All Blacks great Colin Meads and much more.

Around town there are also many other Kiwiana displays, corrugated iron kiwi sculptures and Kiwiana-themed public toilets.
For anyone keen to take a piece of Kiwiana home with them, there are gift stores offering a range of souvenirs while the Ōtorohanga isite Visitor Information Centre sells colourful Kiwiana posters in a range of sizes.
