Located just across the road from Hamilton Zoo, Waiwhakareke Natural Heritage Park is a tranquil green space on the city's north-western edge. Covering more than 65.5 hectares, the park offers gentle walking trails through native bush, wetlands and around the serene Lake Waiwhakareke (Horseshoe Lake).

The park features a network of easy walking tracks, including a loop trail that takes around 1-2 hours to complete. Wander through regenerating lowland forest, open clearings and wetland areas rich with birdlife. The well-formed paths make this an ideal option for families or anyone looking for a short, relaxed Hamilton walk close to the city.

An elevated viewing platform located near the entrance, open daily from 9.30am to 4.30pm, offers sweeping views of the park and surrounding landscape - a rewarding spot to pause and take in the sights and sounds of nature.

Once farmland, Waiwhakareke is now a living example of ecological restoration in action. Thousands of eco-sourced native plants have been established here, helping to recreate the original wetland and forest habitats of the Hamilton Basin. The result is a growing sanctuary for native plants, birds and aquatic species such as longfin eels and mudfish.

Community volunteers continue to play an important role in restoring and caring for the park. Regular planting days and maintenance activities offer opportunities to support the ongoing regeneration of this special place.

Please Note: Dogs are not allowed inside Waiwhakareke Natural Heritage Park.
