Discover one of the Waikato’s most peaceful wetland walks

If you’re looking for an easy nature walk in the Waikato, Lake Rotopiko (Lake Serpentine) is one of the region’s hidden gems. Just a few minutes south of Ohaupo, this beautiful reserve offers an easy walk through native wetlands, alongside tranquil peat lakes and beneath towering kahikatea trees.

The walking tracks are suitable for most ages and abilities, making Lake Rotopiko a great stop for families, birdwatchers and anyone wanting to slow down and reconnect with nature. Along the way, you’ll discover boardwalks, viewing platforms, native birdlife and one of the best remaining peat lake ecosystems in New Zealand.

Wander through a remarkable wetland

Lake Rotopiko is part of a nationally significant network of peat lakes found only in the Waikato. These rare wetlands have been shaped over thousands of years and provide an important habitat for native birds, fish, reptiles and plants.

Choose from short loop walks that wind through restored wetlands, native forest and open grassland, or explore the 1.5km Wetland Discovery Trail. Informative interpretation panels share the story of the lakes, while viewing platforms provide peaceful spots to stop and take in the scenery.

Keep an eye out for native wetland birds including fernbirds, spotless crakes and the elusive matuku hūrepo (Australasian bittern), as well as native skinks basking in the sun.

Discover the future National Wetland Centre

Lake Rotopiko is also home to the future National Wetland Centre, an ambitious conservation project led by the National Wetland Trust.

Years of restoration have transformed the area into a thriving wetland sanctuary, helping protect rare native wildlife while creating a place where visitors can experience and learn about one of New Zealand's most important ecosystems.

Families can also complete the Kiwi Guardians challenge, adding an interactive adventure for younger explorers.
