Howarth Memorial Wetlands Walk Te Aroha
Located in Te Aroha, Howarth Memorial Wetlands is a peaceful wetland walk and wildlife refuge, ideal for an easy nature escape, birdwatching and gentle exploring close to town.
The walk follows a flat loop through the wetlands, with boardwalk sections, bridges, native planting and viewing points across the water. Keep an eye out for birdlife along the way, and take your time enjoying the quiet, scenic surroundings. It is a great option for families, casual walkers and anyone looking for a relaxed Waikato walking trail without a big climb.
Allow around one hour to complete the loop. The track is generally easy, but boardwalk sections can flood from time to time, particularly after heavy rain, so it is best to check conditions before you go.
Getting there: Access is available from several locations: via the footbridge at the end of Lawrence Avenue, via the boardwalk at Kenwyn Reserve on Kenrick Street, or from Spur Street.
Good to know
Dogs: Dogs are allowed, but Howarth Memorial Wetlands is a wildlife sanctuary, so dogs must be kept on a lead at all times. There is a fenced off-lead dog exercise area nearby at the Spur Street end of Boyd Park.
Track updates: Before visiting, check the Matamata-Piako District Council website for the latest access information, facilities and any track updates.
Best for: Birdwatching, families, gentle walks, nature lovers
