Lavender fields & gift shops

Enchantment and love, serenity and calmness – that’s what lavender is all about with perfumed fields waiting to be admired in many parts of the Waikato.

Lavender farms in the Waikato

Blooms are at their best in the region – and totally Instagram-worthy – from mid-November until late January and often into February, depending on when individual lavender farms harvest their flowers to make essential oil.

At Lavender Backyard near Hamilton the fields of lavender grow alongside another delicious offering the Waikato is well known for, blueberries.

This is a picture-perfect place. Visitors are welcome to wander the gardens, pick their own and take photographs of themselves amongst the lavender.

At Alphra Lavender, near Te Awamutu, there is a tour where you can learn about the miraculous lavender plant and flowers, and the importance of bees in ensuring successful pollination. The thoughtful owners also have drones for hire if you would like to film and photograph the rows of lavender from the air

In Taupiri, just off SH1 on the road to Gordonton, is Whitbourne Lavender. Many visitors here say the moment they open their car door to the lavender perfumed fresh air, their cares simply waft away.

Here too, lavender is a culinary ingredient as you will discover if you book afternoon tea.

Lavender also makes it into the kitchen at Lavender Backyard with a hint of lavender in their popular gourmet blueberry jam, as well as in the range specialty teas sold in the gift shop – a cup of lavender and camomile tea before bedtime is sure to inspire sweet dreaming.

Waikato lavender growers have farm shops on site, and online, that are laden with lavender treats.

Amongst the typical temptations are sachets stuffed with dried lavender flowers (a heavenly addition to any wardrobe when you return home), aromatherapy pillow mists, room fresheners, oils, soaps, bath bombs, candles, face and body creams, lip balms and an enormous variety of bouquets and other arrangements of dried lavender flowers – oh, and there’s even laundry powder that’s infused with lavender and lavender-laced filtered water for your iron.

The enchanting Scented Soap Deli in Pirongia Village is another place to stop off to purchase a range of lavender products.
