Day 1: Waterfalls, Wildlife & Walks

Morning: Wairere Falls Hike
Drive: Depart Hamilton via SH1 and SH29 towards Matamata (approx. 1 hr)
- Start the adventure with a hike to Wairere Falls, the tallest waterfall in the North Island.
- Walk to the lower lookout (45 min return) or continue to the summit (2–3 hrs return) for panoramic views across the Waikato plains.
Tip: Wear comfy shoes, pack water and snacks, and check track conditions before heading out.
Lunch Stop: Matamata
- Refuel at a local favourite like Merchant of Matamata or Momento Espresso.
Afternoon: Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari
Drive: Head south via SH27 and Arapuni Rd (approx. 40 min)
- Explore this ancient forest sanctuary, home to native wildlife and towering trees inside a predator-proof fence.
- Choose a guided tour or self-guided walk — and don’t miss the canopy tower for spectacular views.
Evening: Stay in Cambridge & Unwind
Drive: From Maungatautari, continue north to Cambridge (approx. 30 min)
- Check in at Hidden Lake Hotel, a boutique escape overlooking Lake Te Koo Utu.
- Head into town for dinner at Alpino Cambridge or Pijaas.
- After dinner, enjoy a sunset stroll around Lake Te Koo Utu, just steps from your hotel

Day 2: River Rides & Garden Wonders

Morning: Te Awa River Ride
- Start your journey from Riverside Adventures Base at the Velodrome — just 10 minutes from your accommodation.
- Hire a bike or e-bike and ride the Te Awa River Ride, a stunning off-road trail tracing the Waikato River.
- Choose your distance or book a shuttle for a one-way adventure.
Top sections to ride:
- Karapiro to Cambridge (16 km): Lakeside bridges and rolling farmland.
- Cambridge to Hamilton Gardens (23 km): Native bush, scenic river crossings, and peaceful outlooks.
Lunch: MADE
- Enjoy a relaxed lunch at MADE, with a mix of eateries showcasing local flavours.
- Or, Podium Cafe, with stunning views of Lake Karapori
Tip: Take time to browse the market for artisan goods and Waikato produce.
Afternoon: Hamilton Gardens
Directions: Arrive directly via bike trail, or drive back via SH1 (approx. 25 min from Karapiro)
- Wander through the world-renowned themed gardens - explore everything from Italian Renaissance to Ancient Egypt Garden, Te Parapara Garden, Surrealist Garden, and more.
Return to Hamilton City
From the gardens, head home after two days of nature-filled adventures.
