4-Day Waikato Road Trip
Whether you're travelling by rental car or campervan, this four-day itinerary is designed to help you experience some of the region's highlights at a relaxed pace, leaving plenty of time to explore, unwind and discover what makes the Mighty Waikato so special.
Day 1: Arrive in Hamilton
Whether you've hired a car or campervan, Hamilton is the perfect place to ease into your journey.
Start with a visit to Zealong Tea Estate, New Zealand's only commercial tea estate. Enjoy a tea tasting or indulge in a signature High Tea while taking in the tranquil views across the plantation.
From there, head into Hamilton and spend the afternoon exploring Hamilton Gardens, one of New Zealand's most celebrated visitor attractions. Wander through the internationally themed gardens, each telling its own story through landscape, culture and design.
As evening approaches, discover Hamilton's vibrant food scene. Browse the stalls at MADE, if you're visiting on a market day, enjoy a drink or bite to eat at The Green, or choose from the city's growing collection of restaurants, cafés, breweries and bars.
Day 2: West Coast Escape to Raglan
Leave the city behind and head west to Raglan, one of New Zealand's favourite coastal towns.
Known for its surf culture, dramatic black sand beaches and creative community, Raglan invites you to slow down. Browse local galleries and boutique stores, enjoy freshly roasted coffee, or simply wander the harbour.
If time allows, make the short detour to Wairēinga/Bridal Veil Falls, where a short forest walk leads to one of the North Island's most spectacular waterfalls.
Day 3: Step into Middle-earth movie magic
Experience one of New Zealand's most iconic attractions.
