Driving safely in New Zealand

A self-drive holiday in the Waikato region is the perfect way to explore the many attractions and hidden gems on offer. Driving in New Zealand can be very different to driving in other countries and it’s important to understand our rules for driving in New Zealand before you get behind the wheel here.

Drivesafe

The Tourism Industry Association of New Zealand has put together a guide including things to consider when planning your trip and as you make your journey around the country as well as some suggested driving routes.

AA Visiting Drivers Training Programme

The AA Visiting Drivers Training Programme will allow visitors to see real-world examples of our different driving environments and road rules well before actually getting behind the wheel here.

On the site users will be able to go through 15 different driving scenarios that have been filmed on roads that many tourists experience. Each scenario will require the user to answer a question about how to drive safely in New Zealand.

The programme is free for anyone to do but users have an option of paying $10 for a certificate when they have successfully completed the programme.
