Nature Itinerary: 10 Days of Iconic Landscapes

This journey is ideal for those wanting to, take in dramatic volcanic landscapes, wander through native forests, and discover iconic lakes, mountains, and hidden gems.

Day 1: Arrive in Hamilton

Welcome to the Mighty Waikato!

Arrive into Hamilton Airport, collect your Rental Car or Motorhome and travel directly to Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari. Explore this predator-free native forest, home to rare wildlife and ancient trees, offering an immediate immersion into New Zealand’s natural environment.

Afternoon: Return to Hamilton in the afternoon and enjoy a relaxing riverside walk along the Waikato River.

Day 2: Hamilton

Gardens and Trails 

Start the day at Hayes Common in Hamilton East for breakfast - riverfront views, warm service, and locally loved plates. Stroll through the world-class Hamilton Gardens, where themed landscapes showcase design styles from around the world.

Enjoy a relaxed afternoon discovering more of the Waikato region or taking in additional river walks either by foot or hire an ebike and explore Te Awa River Ride.

Day 3: Waikato - Waitomo - Taranaki

Glowworm Experience & Taranaki Arrival

Travel south to Waitomo for a Spellbound cave experience, where you glide through dark limestone caves lit by thousands of glowworms. The quiet, intimate setting makes this a memorable highlight.

Continue your journey toward Taranaki, with the opportunity to stop at natural coastal wonders along the way such as Tongapōrutu, known for its dramatic cliffs, sea stacks and black sand beaches. These rugged landscapes offer a striking contrast to the inland scenery and are ideal for short scenic walks and photo stops.

Arrive in New Plymouth in the evening and unwind by the coast.

Day 4: Explore Taranaki

Coastal Walkway and Pukeiti Gardens

Start the day on the New Plymouth Coastal Walkway, where ocean views and open spaces create a refreshing coastal experience. Later, visit Pukeiti Gardens, surrounded by rainforest and known for its unique plant collections. Enroute to Pukeiti a stop at Dawn cafe in Oakura for lunch is a must - the contrast between coast and mountain landscapes is a defining feature of Taranaki. Take the scenic drive back to New Plymouth along the Surf Highway coastal drive.

Day 5: Pouākai Crossing

Taranaki Nature Escape

Take on the Pouākai Crossing, a full-day hike through diverse volcanic landscapes. Walk through wetlands, lava formations and alpine terrain, with incredible views of Taranaki Maunga. The reflection at Pouākai Tarn is a standout moment of the journey.

Alternate option (weather or lower activity)

If conditions are not suitable or a shorter day is preferred, explore Egmont National Park short walks such as the Dawson Falls tracks or Wilkies Pools loop. These walks still showcase the region’s lush rainforest, waterfalls and volcanic features without the full-day commitment.

Alternatively, visit Tupare Gardens, a beautifully restored heritage garden with river views, Pukekura Park or spend time exploring New Plymouth’s galleries, coastal spots and cafés such as Monica's Eatery.

Day 6: Journey to Ruapehu

From Coast to Craters

Travel inland as the scenery shifts from coastal to dramatic volcanic landscapes. Arrive in Ruapehu and take the Sky Waka Gondola for expansive alpine views across Tongariro National Park. The rugged terrain offers a striking change in environment.

Day 7: Tongariro Alpine Crossing

Epic Crossings & Scenic Walks

Experience the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, one of New Zealand’s most iconic day hikes. The track passes through craters, steaming vents and vibrant emerald lakes, showcasing the raw power of the landscape. It is a challenging but highly rewarding day.

Alternate option (weather or lower activity)

If conditions are not suitable or a shorter day is preferred, explore the Tama Lakes track, a rewarding walk through alpine tussock landscapes leading to two striking crater lakes.

Alternatively, discover the Ohakune Old Coach Road, a gentle walking or cycling trail that winds through native bush and historic railway viaducts, offering a mix of scenery and local history.

Day 8: Ohakune to Taupō

Volcanic Landscapes and River Adventures


Travel north from Ohakune toward Taupō on a scenic drive that threads through the volcanic heart of the North Island. As you leave the foothills of Mt Ruapehu, the landscape opens into rolling farmland and native bush, with opportunities to pause at viewpoints showcasing the Tongariro National Park’s dramatic peaks. Consider a stop in National Park Village or a short detour to the Tawhai Falls track, an easy walk to a picturesque waterfall hidden in the forest.

Continue on toward Tūrangi, known as the trout fishing capital of New Zealand, where the Tongariro River flows clear and fast from the mountains. Here, enjoy an exhilarating rafting experience, navigating gentle rapids through pristine wilderness while learning about the area’s natural and cultural significance. After your river adventure, carry on the short drive to Taupō, arriving in the afternoon to unwind beside the lake and take in views across to the volcanic plateau.

Day 9: Taupō

Taupō Nature and Adventure Highlights

Start the day with a visit to Huka Falls, where you can take a short walk to the main viewpoints and, if time allows, continue along the riverside track for a more scenic experience. For something extra, a quick jet boat ride offers a closer and more thrilling perspective of the falls. From there, either explore the geothermal landscape at Craters of the Moon or unwind at Spa Thermal Park, where a natural hot stream meets the Waikato River.

In the afternoon, head back toward Taupō for lunch, ideally by the lakefront. Afterward, take a boat cruise out to the Māori rock carvings to see this cultural highlight up close, or choose a guided kayak if you prefer a more active option. Spend any remaining time enjoying a relaxed walk along the lakefront.

If you’re looking to wind down further, consider ending the day with a soak in nearby hot pools for a relaxing finish.

Day 10: Taupo to Waikato 

A Journey to Middle-earth

Travel back into the Waikato region and experience one of New Zealand’s most iconic attractions, the Hobbiton Movie Set Tour. Wander through the rolling green hills of the Shire, explore hobbit holes and enjoy a drink at the Green Dragon Inn. This immersive experience offers a unique blend of film, storytelling and countryside scenery.

Alternate option

For a nature-focused alternative, enjoy a Camjet Eco Cruise along the Waikato River. This guided experience combines scenic jet boating with insights into the river’s history, wildlife and surrounding landscapes.

After your activity, continue to Cambridge and settle in for a relaxing evening.

Day 11:

Enjoy a relaxed morning in Cambridge before travelling a short distance to Hamilton Airport for departure. This final stretch offers a calm and easy conclusion to your journey through the central North Island.
