Explore the best of the central North Island on a family-friendly journey through Waikato, Waitomo, Taranaki, Ruapehu and Taupō. Designed for all ages, this itinerary combines outdoor adventures, interactive experiences and relaxed moments, with plenty of flexibility along the way. From nature and culture to fun-filled activities and scenic drives, it offers a well-paced mix of discovery and downtime for an easy, memorable family getaway.

Day 1: Waikato

Arrive at Hamilton Airport.

Land at Hamilton Airport via Jetstar - the heart of the central North Island and your gateway to nature and adventure. Pick up your motorhome rental from Oli Campers or check out some of the rental car options available from Hamilton Airport. 

Spend the afternoon exploring the internationally recognised Hamilton Gardens, where themed garden collections take visitors through different cultures and historical eras. The gardens provide an easy introduction to the region and are a relaxing way to start the trip.

Rainy Day Option:

If the weather is not ideal, visit Te Whare Taonga o Waikato Museum & Gallery, where interactive exhibitions showcase the region’s history, art and science in an engaging indoor environment. If you have time - head to both!

Evening Activity and Dinner - SkyCity Hamilton

For a convenient first night out, head to SkyCity Hamilton, located in the centre of the city. The entertainment complex offers several family friendly activities and dining options all in one place.

Day 2: Adventure Day (Wildlife or Caves)

Option 1 – Wildlife and Nature:

Visit Hamilton Zoo to see animals from around the world and conservation programmes.
In the afternoon explore Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari, a predator-free ecological sanctuary with rare native birds.

Option 2 – Waitomo Caves Adventure:


Take a morning trip to Waitomo (approximately 1 hour from Hamilton) and experience the famous glowworm caves.
Families can choose from guided glowworm cave tours, boat rides through the glowworm grotto or more adventurous activities such as black-water rafting through underground cave systems or ziplining.

Day 3: Explore Taranaki 

Head west to the beautiful coastal city of New Plymouth, where ocean views and family-friendly adventures set the tone for the day.

Start by stretching your legs along the famous New Plymouth Coastal Walkway. This scenic path hugs the coastline and is perfect for both walking and cycling. Kids will love spotting the quirky Wind Wand swaying in the breeze, watching waves crash against the rocks, and stopping at playgrounds along the way. Bring scooters or bikes if you can, it is an easy, fun ride with plenty of places to pause for snacks or photos.

In the afternoon, unwind at Pukekura Park, a true hidden gem for families. Wander through lush gardens, feed the ducks, and let the kids run free on the open lawns. Right next door is the Brooklands Zoo, a small but delightful free zoo where little ones can get up close to animals like monkeys, farmyard friends, and colourful birds. It is relaxed, low-key, and perfect for a gentle afternoon.

Rainy day option:
If the weather turns, head to the Fun Ho! Toy Museum in nearby Inglewood. This charming spot is packed with vintage toys, many made right here in New Zealand. It is a nostalgic and interactive experience, with plenty to capture kids’ imaginations and a few surprises for the adults too.

Day 4: Nature in Taranaki

Hillsborough Holden Museum is a great family stop with something for everyone. Explore a fascinating collection of classic Holden cars and step back in time while kids imagine their own road trip adventures.

Outside, keep the fun going with the Bathurst-themed mini putt, perfect for a bit of friendly family competition, then hop on the luge for a fast and fun ride down the track.

In the afternoon, head to Pukeiti Gardens, where kids can run along forest tracks, cross swing bridges, and explore lush native bush while adults enjoy the stunning rhododendrons and peaceful scenery. It’s a great place to unwind and let everyone stretch their legs.

Rainy day option:
Head into New Plymouth to explore galleries, cosy cafés, and creative spaces, with plenty of spots to warm up and keep the kids entertained.

Day 5: Journey to Ruapehu

Drive inland from New Plymouth toward the Ruapehu region (approx. 2.5–3 hours), passing through scenic farmland and volcanic landscapes. Optional stops include Whanganui River viewpoints or a short break in Raetihi.

Day 6: Tongariro National Park

Explore Tongariro National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage area known for its volcanic landscapes and alpine scenery.

Morning:

  • Ride the Sky Waka Gondola at Whakapapa for panoramic views of Mt Ruapehu and surrounding terrain. Depending on the season, you may also have time for skiing, snowboarding, or exploring the snow play area.

  • At the top, enjoy short walks, viewing platforms, or a café stop.

Afternoon:

Visit the National Army Museum Waiouru for engaging exhibits and interactive displays suitable for families, including hands-on experiences and insights into New Zealand’s military history.

Overnight in Ohakune or Waimarino 

Day 7: Arrive in Taupō

Drive north to Taupō (approx. 1.5–2 hours), then ease into a slower-paced day by the lake.

Morning / Afternoon:

  • If you are wanting to start the day with some adrenaline stop in Turangi for a family float with Tongariro River Rafting.

  • Enjoy a relaxed lakeside walk along Lake Taupō, with space for kids to play and explore.

  • Watch the opening of the Aratiatia Dam gates (release times are 10am, 12pm & 2pm) 

  • If weather permits, hire Taupō pedal boats for a fun and easy activity on the water.

  • Spend time at DeBretts Hot Springs, with warm pools and family-friendly water play areas.

Rainy day option:
Visit the Taupō Museum, featuring interactive exhibits and displays on local history, Māori culture, and the region’s volcanic landscape.

Overnight at Taupo DeBretts 

Day 8: Taupō Adventure Day

Morning:

  • Spend the morning at Huka Prawn Park, a fun, hands-on activity for families with prawn fishing, play areas, and plenty to explore.

  • Combine with a Huka Falls boat cruise for an up-close experience of the falls.

Rainy morning option:
Visit Mind Junction Activity Park, offering puzzles, mini golf, mazes, and interactive exhibits suited to a range of ages.

Afternoon:

  • After lunch, begin the drive back toward the Waikato region.

  • Stop at the Hobbiton Movie Set for a guided tour through Middle-earth, a highlight for both adults and children.

Day 9: Travel home

After breakfast,  make your way back to Hamilton Airport - for an easy, relaxed connection back to Australia from the heart of New Zealand.
