7 Feb 19: Feast Waikato Announced

The inaugural Feast Waikato event kicks off in April with a four-course progressive dinner down Hamilton’s main street. Run by food and hospitality promotion group Waikato Food Inc, the weekend-long Feast (April 5-7) will showcase some of the region’s finest culinary offerings.

Waikato Food Inc chairperson, Vicki Ravlich-Horan, says the opening progressive dinner will start with canapés at the city’s award-winning Palate restaurant, overlooking Waikato River. “We’ll then move en masse to one of the newest kids on the block, Mr Pickles, for entrée. Then Dough Bros for the main, before finishing the night at the other end of Victoria St, for dessert at Gothenburg.”

Ravlich-Horan says the dinner will highlight what Feast weekend is all about:  “We want to present the depth and breadth of food and hospitality in the Waikato.  It’s also a chance for local businesses to work together, to do something different, and have some fun.”

As well as the progressive dinner, Feast will offer pop up eateries, markets, special dinners, and foodie workshops.  Ravlich-Horan says local food and hospitality businesses are enthusiastic, and the list of possible events is growing.

“We know that locals will embrace the idea. This wonderful weekend in the Waikato has potential to grow into a wonderful week in the Waikato.”

Ravlich-Horan says Waikato Food Inc would love to see other groups organise allied events for Feast: photography enthusiasts could do a food photography workshop or competitions, Lions could organise a cookbook swap, the Chiefs or other big iconic Waikato sports teams could have a cook-off.

“Let’s come together as a region to celebrate our great food.”

Waikato Food Inc

Waikato Food Inc is a not for profit member-based organisation with the simple goal of celebrating and helping to grow the food and hospitality industry in the Waikato.  The group of volunteers is behind the much loved Matariki Dish Challenge, held each June & July as well as FermentFest in September.  This year, along with the launch of Feast Waikato they will be running the Melt Challenge – searching for the best darn cheese toastie in the Waikato.
