COVID-19 - Google My Business Update

Google has made some substantial changes to Google My Business functionality during this crisis. As an extension of our support program for Google’s DMO Partnership, an overview document which answers the most common questions about these changes and provides recommendations and next steps for businesses during this time.

The guide includes information on:

  • 'Temporary closure' option for opening hours
  • Using 'Posts' during COVID-19
  • GMB features not available during COVID-19

Of particular note is the  new option to your GMB profile to “mark as temporarily closed.”

While technically every non-essential business in New Zealand currently falls into this category, you should be aware that “temporarily closed” businesses will have reduced exposure in Google’s products - which means you’re less likely to show up when someone searches for your business or your category of business in maps or search during the Level 4 restrictions. If you want the quickest route to update your listing, you can simply click the temporarily closed button and come back and turn your business back on when restrictions are lifted.
