Hamilton & Waikato Tourism Ambassador Programmes

Designed for anyone engaging with manuhiri (visitors) who come to the Waikato, our Ambassador Programmes help create storytellers and ambassadors who can connect with people and authentically engage with what all New Zealanders understand as ‘manaakitanga’ and ‘kaitiakitanga’.

We have Ambassador Programmes available for:
  • Hamilton Kirikiriroa
  • Waikato District
  • Waipā District
  • Matamata-Piako District
  • Ōtorohanga & Waitomo Districts

These programmes are designed for people engaging with domestic and international visitors across the region, whether those people are retail staff, front of house, baristas, bar staff, transport providers, motel/accommodation staff etc. The aim is to create storytellers and ambassadors with real pride in their districts/city and the wider mighty Waikato region.

Locals will gain greater confidence in connecting with visitors to the region by showcasing the amazing place we call home and expressing our pride and knowledge of their district/city and mighty Waikato. Locals will have the opportunity to understand how to share our story with visitors and enhance the visitor experience to the region.

Course content

Participants engage in a three-hour workshop delving into the history and unique stories surrounding the backbone of their district/city, the Waikato river, early Māori history and legends, experience of early explorers and European settlers and the Waikato land wars, right through to the exciting regional growth and economy of today.

During this bespoke programme participants will explore ways to connect, engage authentically and make a real difference to visitors from around NZ and the globe, ensuring they’re left with a highly memorable and lasting impression of just how special the Waikato is.

Key topics covered in the Ambassador Programme:
  • The art of storytelling;
  • New Zealand history;
  • What makes the district/city and wider Waikato unique; and
  • Enhancing the visitor experience.
