Dec 2015: Vilagrad Back after Record Time

Vilagrad Winery suffered a devastating fire in the early hours of 29 June 2015. The suspected electrical fire destroyed 60-70 per cent of the building including kitchen, 100 year old barrel room, half of the winery, and the offices in the original homestead.

Over 80 firefighters- many volunteers, were called out to battle the blaze. Fortunately the firefighters were able to control the fire which lasted over 6 hours and managed to save portions of the restaurant. "The fire fighters did an amazing job, we are truly grateful for their hard work"- winemaker Jacob Nooyen explains.

The Nooyen family were absolutely devastated watching 100 years of history, memories, and hard work go up in flames. The family could have easily given up after such a heartbreaking blow, but with a fully booked Christmas and Wedding season ahead they set to work with a goal of reopening by summer. True to their word, three months and ten days later the Nooyen family opened their doors again for their famous Mediterranean style Sunday lunches to a sold out crowd. "The entire community, family and friends of Vilagrad have been amazing, this would not have been possible without the huge amount of support we received."

With temporary structures in place, family owned and operated Vilagrad Winery have now been open since the 11th of October just in time for the busy summer season. Co-owner Adam Nooyen said there were "a lot of sleepless nights" involved in the rebuild. Many reminders of the fire scattered throughout the restaurant including burnt barrels, blackened walls and their "fire wine" provide a constant reminder of this event that has re-shaped Vilagrad. "We are now looking at improving and expanding what the restaurant currently offers and a "cellar door experience" giving visitors the opportunity of tours and in-house tasting sessions is a big part of that agenda. The Nooyen family are optimistic for the outlook of Vilagrad Winery and are toasting to a bright future ahead.

Vilagrad Winery specialises in food, wine and entertainment. They are now open for their famous Sunday Lunches every Sunday, Christmas parties, weddings, wine tours and tastings, and private functions. Vilagrad Winery is the perfect place to celebrate.
